Retiring Member
A very warm letter from Derek Thomas, who
for many years has been a second claim BVAC member, explains that he has felt the need to retire from
membership since he is now in his 80th year and suffering from a
spinal problem.
We of course wish Derek all the best in his latter years and
glad to have known him as a BVAC member and for the support he gave to his
second claim club for so many years – Happy retirement Derek.
Games Evening for WheelPower
BVAC held a games evening on
12 February 2010 at the premises of Blackheath & Bromley with 48
people attending for the Beetle Drive, Quizes, Card Bingo and Fish &
Chip supper plus raffle and auction.
The bar was open all of the evening which had been organized
by Shirley Poole [and him in doors]
. it proved to be a great night with the total of £596.60 raised for WheelPower,
completing our fundraising carried out for our anniversary year.
BVAC AGM 2010
The club's annual general meeting was held at
Parklangley Club on 9 February 2010. There was a near record attendance and it
was good to see such interest from the membership.
The meeting honoured Joan Burns, who was standing down
from the committee having completed 20 years service and, probably, having held
office in every capacity available. We presented her with a photo and theatre
vouchers.
We also expressed out gratitude to Tony Unseld, who as
standing down after three years as General Secretary.
Treasurer’s report – A balance sheet was passed out to all members at the
meeting, and then explained in more detail by the Treasurer Shirley Poole.
Membership Secretary’s report – Joan Burns reported that as of 31st December 2009 the club had
a total of 87 members comprising 43 men, 38 women and 6 honorary members. Of the
subscription paying members 32% were second claim to Bromley Vets.
Elections – One nomination (Geraldine Turner) had been received for the post of Membership Secretary to
replace Joan Burns. There were no nominations for the post
of General Secretary which therefore also become vacant [Linda Whitely and Connie Jackson have subsequently
come forward and will share various of the responsbilities associated with this post.]
The remaining committee members present
were all willing to carry on in their posts
Election of Hon auditor – Thanks were offered to Brian Hartley who was willing to carry on as
auditor.
Bromley Veterans Challenge Cup - The Shircol challenge cup for the most improved handicap performance
during the year was awarded to Geraldine Turner. [However, it later transpired
that there was an error in the calculations and the true recipient should have
been Anne Porritt.]
Founders cup - Joan Burns introduced a new cup to be known as The Founders Cup to be presented to the fastest
BVAC first claim member in the London Marathon each year from 2010. The cup had
been donated by the 4 founder members who were still members in the 20th
Anniversary year to mark that milestone. They were Joan Burns, Maureen Farish,
Nanette Cross and June Hartley.
BVAC 5-mile Cross Country race
We will once more be hosting a 5 mile cross country race at Spring
Park/ Sparrows Den. The 2010 event will take place on Saturday 13 March at
2.00pm. For further details, see the race page. We will need a number of members to marshal but if you would rather
participate, it is suggested you get your entry in early as numbers will be
limited.
BVAC mourns the sad death of Derek James
We regret that we have to inform BVAC members of the sad death of
Derek James, after a short illness. Our sympathy goes to Helen and the rest of
the James family. Derek has been a staunch supporter of the club throughout its
years, with Helen being a founder member. He is pictured right winning the
unique 'Derek' award for services to the club at the 2008 annual dinner. He will
be sorely missed.
London Marathon 2010 Club Draw (and
Dinner)
The two free places which BVAC received
for the London Marathon 2010 were allocated on Tuesday 15 December in accordance
with the constitution among those members who satisfy the criteria for entry -
those individuals who have been members for at least a year (or thereabouts),
are first claim to BVAC and have applied for places but been rejected.
With only two applicants this year the
places went to:
Tina Northwood
James Winbourne
Had there been more applicants for these places,
a draw would have taken place. The necessary allocation took place at
Parklangley Club, when a a number of members
sat down to enjoy the Christmas menu available, following the 'usual' Tuesday
training run (Santa Soper took his merry band of followers to see the Chrismas
lights in the front garden of a house in Hayes).
20th Anniversary Events
We have carried out a
series of events for 2009 in aid of the charity WheelPower at Stoke Mandeville.
These culminated in a celebratory dinner to mark our 20th year as a club.
The dinner was held at The Warren, Croydon Road, West Wickham.
Thanks to all those involved in organising and running the event and to Shirley
Poole and Joan Burns particularly for the efforts they put in, with 82 tickets
being sold. Thanks also to the following:
- Valerie Hill, wife of long-standing BVAC member
Geoff Hill, for making and donating to the event a fantastic celebration cake
(see photo opposite);
- Richard Farish for producing all of the table name
places and for the mini posters celebrating the 20 years of BVAC which were
displayed on every table (Richard also designed the original “motif “ of BVAC);
- Maureen Farish, chairperson for the night (in the
absence of Phil Greenfield who was on holiday) and a founder member of BVAC who
gave a rousing account of the formation and development of BVAC;
- Mike Peel, for running the slide show and taking a
number of excellent photos of the event (see further below);
- Alan Pickering, a past President of Blackheath
Harriers (as it was then before the merger with Bromley AC), for his
entertaining anecdotes; and
- Steven Brown, a disabled wheelchair athlete (would
you believe a rugby playing wheel chair athlete), representing Wheel Power the
chosen charity for this 20th
anniversary year
A celebration cheque was presented to Steven by Joan Burns showing
that a sum to date of £ 2250.00 had been raised - see photo opposite.
Excellent raffle prizes were sold which raised a further sum of £430
plus the quiz box for the night [with the contributions] raised a further £67.75
Thanks to everyone for attending and giving so generously to the
cause.
The slide show depicting scenes from the first 20 years are
available here. As noted, there are also a number of photos from the event (click here to take you to the page from which you can
view individually or select the slide show), original high resolution versions of which are available if
people would like them (perhaps we might suggest a small donation of say £1 per
photo - if you want a printed copy this would cover any cost of reproduction
with any excess or, in the case of requesting a digital original the full
amount, going to WheelPower - please contact Phil Greenfield on 020 8462 5496 or
via admin@bromleyvetsac.org.uk noting the numbers of the photos in which you are
interested).
