BVAC 5-mile cross country race, Sunday 18 March 2012

We held a 5-mile cross country race at Sparrows Den on Sunday 18 March. The weather started bright and sunny but gradually deteriorated and had turned to wind and rain by the presentation of the prizes. The course was firm on the whole but a little greasy due to overnight rain. There certainly wasn't inches of mud as has occasionally been known in the past. We included the same age group prizes and the team prize this year, going to any three athletes from one club who were not otherwise prize winners. You could not win a 'lower' category prize if you had won a 'higher' category prize.

Sadly, the computer being used to correlate the results on-site lost power and a manual alternative had to be hastily compiled - with the consequence that the presentation was delayed and one or two erroneous conclusions reached as to who had won which prize. Those who were awarded prizes in error will not be asked to return them but apologies go to the couple of people who did not receive the proper accreditation at the time (we'll make sure they do get prizes).

The homemade cakes were first class, as usual. It being mother's day, there was a red rose for every female runner. And, since it was St Patrick's day 24 hours earlier, there was a can of guinness for each male runner. A jubillee medal was also received by all. There were umpteen marshals around the course too, so special thanks to them. Some 20 clubs were represented. Clayton Barrett of Medway & Maidstone was fastest round the course in a fantastic time of 31 mins 39 seconds.

Donations and profits to St Christopher's hospice.

Fancy trying your hand at Track & Field? For all those vets (35+) who don't belong to clubs that take part in the Southern Counties Veterans Athletics Clubs league, why not become a second claim member to Bromley Vets so that you can have a go - anything from 100m to 3,000m plus the usual jumps and throws. Give us a call.
