BVAC 5-mile cross country race
A select bunch of 20 runners completed the 2011 BVAC 5-mile cross country race on
Saturday 5 March. There was representation from a broad range of clubs and a
number of unaffiliated runners. The usual home-made cakes certainly added a
touch of unique magic to this challenging run. Thanks to all the BVAC members
who made or donated cakes and to all those who marshalled at the event.

Kent Fitness League Cross Country Races - occasional
Sundays during Winter
We have now completed all the cross country Kent Fitness
cross country league meetings. All the races started at 11am and were around 5 miles long
on varying off-road terrain. Although
only the first 7 men and 3 women counted toward our points total, every finisher
helped to push down the opponents scoring. Entry fee was £2 on the day. Finishers
entered into end of race raffle.
For more information don’t forget to check out the
web pages devoted to this league – www.canterburyharriers.org and www.swanleyanddistrictac.org.

run either in the old style vests or in the new-style long or short sleeved
tops.

Parkrun cup - third Saturday every month - 2010-11
A new trophy has been fought for over the period from when we
started in June 2010 to January 2011. Points were awarded for every BVAC participant in the Bromley
Parkrun at Norman Park on the third Saturday of each month. Congratulations go
to Anne Unseld who pipped Soheel Bhandari by one single point to become
inaugural winner of the Parkrun Cup. Very well done to both runners and, indeed,
to all those who took part during the course of this 'season'.
Runners got 2 points for completing the run and 1
point for obtaining a personal best. Points from 10 down to 1 were also be
awarded according to the best age graded performances. We will be reviewing the
way that points are awarded in light of experiences in this first year and the
first run counting towards the 2011 season will be 19 February. We want to
provide more encouragement and reward for commitment and improvement as well as
quality of overall performance.
The eigth and final race of this current competition was run on 15
January in blustery and very wet conditions. There was a relatively small group
of Bromley Vets who were present, including Pat Cliff who unfortunately had to
pull out part way through with injury.

The seventh race, in December, was a frightfully cold affair coming
after a heavy dowsing of snow the day before. There must have been doubts as to
whether the run would go ahead but a hardy few turned up, including five BVAC
members. It also saw Gavin Kitchingham's debut as a member of BVAC in this
event, with a victory (yes, first place) in a time of 18.28, although his PB for
the Parkrun remains an electric 17.38 - we're really pleased to have Gavin join
us, and we hope, show what he can do in the remainder of the cross-country
season and the track and field to come. With one race to go, Soheel has moved up
to take over the lead from Anne Unseld by just one point.

The sixth race, in November, saw one personal best for BVAC with Mark
Russell notching up a sub 20 min run for the first time. There were relatively
few BVAC runners though in a massive field of 150. Anne Unseld has started to
open up a gap at the top of the overall leader board.

There were relatively few BVAC runners in the 4th qualifying race in
September. Anne Unseld leapt back to the top of the leader board with a new
personal best. The scoring and latest standings are:

Swanley Park relays (4 x 1mile)
This year we were only able to manage one team of four and that was
an all male effort. Teams compete in the men's, women's and mixed races.
We came in a fantastic 9th place out of 39 teams overall (some
men's, some women's and a few mixed). We were 2 minutes 36 seconds behind the winners.
All our runners times were closely bunched - an excellent balance. Well done.
Keith Burgess 5.45
Ray Chapman 5.51
Mark Russell 5.58
Chris Marshall 6.04
