Another very high turnout with 20 full members. It was great to see Alison Wilson back with us as well but she must currently go down as a guest - can we persuade her to rejoin?! Sorry to see Chris Marshall not quite at his peak but terrific to welcome back Mike Turner back at the top of our leader board after injury last season. It was great to have Clive and Lynette Walker running with us again too. Some excellent performances from our newer memebrs too with Richard Proctor, Rob Brown and Keith Burgess all gaining good points.

The final positions are subject to change as some adjustments are yet to be put through.

KFL Race Report - Rob Bright

The Kent Fitness League season got under way at Swanley on Sunday and we were treated to some pretty traditional cross country conditions - cool temperatures, blustery wind and plenty of mud. As usual for this popular venue - the car parks filled up early, the queues for the toilets reached the lake and nigh on 400 runners reported to the start line for the 11am minute’s silence. Thankfully, the rain held off until after the run.

Former KFL champion Allan Lee visited Swanley 12 months ago and was defeated by Barry Royden on the second lap. This year he had things more to himself as he coasted around the 5.2 mile twisting circuit in a shade under 29 minutes. Allan has been considered in the past to fall within our definition of an elite athlete and his form on Sunday suggests that this is still the case. So the official honours went to 17 year old Sam Murphy (Sittingbourne) who was comfortable in second while James Ridger (Paddock Wood) outkicked lead veteran David Hall (Dartford RR) into third place. The Roadrunners had two in the top 10 with Andrew Green celebrating his final day before hitting 40 in 10th place. Eight of our 17 clubs had runners in the top 10.

Alan Newman (Paddock Wood) took the honours in the over 50 contest and Trevor Edgley (Invicta) was the leading over 60 man.

The womens race was led all the way by Amy Smith who beat all but 17 of the men; and Tina Oldershaw, last year’s champion, came home second. Both are now non-scorers in the main Championship, so the official winning lady was Annabelle Stearns (Gravesend) who came in aroun 33 minutes, just 8 seconds behind Oldershaw. A much improved Cara Oliver (Dartford H) finished third with Nicola Groom (formerly Susans) finishing her first race since the summer in third place.

Larkfield AC started the season as they finished the last with a storming win in the combined team contest with last year’s champions Paddock Wood in second place. The Larks also led the Women’s team contest in this opening event.

Once again, Swanley and District AC put on an excellent race, despite the high numbers of competitors. There was a minor bottleneck in the first half mile which caused a traffic jam in the middle part of the field and the narrow paths required constant mental stimulation to plan the best places to overtake etc - but it was greatly enjoyed by all nonetheless.

Earlier, we had a hard-fought junior series race in which 24 boys and girls took part - the results will be posted separately.

The next race is on Sunday 23rd November at Rough Common, Canterbury - this will also feature a junior race and a senior event.
